Town complete German tour with Interwetten Cup
Town boss, Paul Lambert, is looking forward to the Interwetten Cup tomorrow afternoon, a structure Lambert knows very well.
“I played in them when I first signed for Dortmund, so for me it’s not new,” he said. “For you guys it’s new but for me it’s not.
“For the team it’s maybe new as well, but 45 and 45 in my book I think is 90, so it’s a game.”
Town will take on Fortuna Düsseldorf in their opening match kicking off at 14:00 (13:00 UK time). The other two teams in the competition, Dutch club Utrecht and hosts SV Meppen, will play then one another at 15:00, again local time. The two losing teams will take part in a third-place play-off at 16:00 with the winning sides meeting in the final at 17:00 (both local time).
Just as last Saturday’s defeat against Paderborn, Lambert is set to field different sides in both games at SV Meppen’s Hänsch-Arena on Sunday.
New signings Luke Garbutt and James Norwood are both expected to make their first appearances in Town shirts.
Gwion Edwards (groin), Jon Nolan (calf) and Alan Judge (wrist) all missed out on the Paderborn friendly last week and could sit out the tournament alongside long term absentee Freddie Sears. However, new signings James Norwood and Luke Garbutt are both set to make their first appearances in a Town shirt.
Lambert is expecting a tough afternoon in Meppen with the standard of opposition high, but the tournament is seen has a key part of pre-season by Lambert: “The tournament in Meppen is very important in our preparation. An endurance test,”
“We meet with Düsseldorf, Utrecht and SV Meppen, strong opponents who will challenge us.
“We are in the fourth week of preparation and are working hard on fitness. The Interwetten Cup is very important to us. We are looking forward to interesting games.”
Tickets for the Interwetten Cup are available online here €22 for seats and €10 for standing. Town supporters are advised to purchase standing tickets in the ExxonMobil grandstand and seating in the KiKxxl grandstand in blocks K and L.
