Reports: Downes linked with Premier League move

Crystal Palace are reportedly showing an interest in Town midfielder Flynn Downes.

According to TWTD, the Premier League side previously watched the 21-year-old in Town’s defeat at Bloomfield Road prior to lockdown.

Downes has attracted plenty of admirers after being one of the standout players in Town’s disappointing first season in League One, with West Ham alongside a number of Championship clubs previously linked with the midfielder.

Downes is currently contracted until 2022, with Town having an option to extend that deal by a further year and would command a decent fee if Town are to tempted to part with one of their best players.

Lee O’Neill has previously stated that he believes it is important to keep hold of the club’s young talent, with Downes’ teammates Luke Woolfenden and Armando Dobra singing new long-term deals with the club.

“If clubs are said to be interested in our young players, then that means they are performing well enough to make an impression and that the potential is there. I’d be more worried if our players weren’t linked with clubs,” O’Neill told the Club website.

“We’re obviously delighted that Luke and Armando have both signed long term deals and as a club, we want to hang on to our best players whatever age. I think Marcus has proved that down the years.

“Like any club though, if an offer comes in for a player you have to look at it. We had that situation in January and we turned down bids for players.”
