Opposition Focus: Burton Albion
We caught up with Burton fan and our residential Promotion Race ‘expert’ BurtonBible to get the inside track on this weekend’s clash at Portman Road.
You currently sit in 12th place, and are without a win in five, are you worried your season could be fizzling out?
It’s a slight worry, yes. But, we are still only seven points of the play-offs and we have had a tough schedule of late, we can easily turn this around and make a late push into the top six.
Last month you lost top scorer, Boyce, has he been the catalyst to the dip in form?
Yes! We have missed Boyce especially his hold up play. We have struggled to get out at times since he left and have been dominated for long periods by our opposition.
We met on the opening day with a deflected Luke Garbutt effort enough for the three points, how has the squad changed since then?
That day we played with no wingers, which was something that we had worked towards the end of last season, but the loss of Marcus Harness to Portsmouth really stopped that system from working.
We now play a 4-3-3 or sometimes a 4-4-2 and new signings Conor Shaugnessy, Joe Powell and Jamie Murphy have all became key players in recent weeks.
Nigel Clough has been at Burton for some time now, is there much pressure on him to get Championship football back at the Pirelli?
No not really. Mainly as despite getting relegated we still have one of the smallest budgets in the league. All the fans want is a bit of stability and football to be excited about. We have got most of our high earners from the Championship off the wage budget now, so that will help us out financially.
Despite this poor run of winless games, which to be fair to the squad had come against some of the top sides in the division, we are still only 7 points of the playoffs with plenty of games left.
We need to turn things around soon though and what better place to build momentum than away against a promotion rival. Lucas Akins broke his scoring draught in the week and Jamie Murphy continues to find the net almost every game. The new signings have boosted squad depth its time for them to start boosting the results now.
Prediction Ipswich 3-2 Burton
