Gerken, 34, has been without a club since being released by Town in the summer and has been training with Colchester with a deal set to be completed.

The former Bristol City keeper made 113 starts for the Blues since arriving on a free in 2013. Gerken looks set to add to his 126 appearances during his first spell with Colchester, where he was an academy product of The U’s.

Meanwhile, according to reports, Town are interested in Dundalk star Cameron Dummigan. Primarily a right-back, Dummigan can play in any position across the back four.

The former Burnley and Oldham full-back, who is set to appear in the Champions League this week, is being chased by Town, Grimsby, Luton, Millwall, Lincoln and Forest Green are amongst a dozen clubs showing an interest.

Town appear unlikely to sign the right back this summer with Lambert insistent no fees will be paid. Town currently have Janoi Donacien and Josh Emmanuel both vying for the position.
